My Personal finance teacher gave us an assignment to see how much would it cost to own a vehicle. a lot of my classmates went used, but i'm going with a base model Nissan Versa! It'd be about $190/mo to lease for me, so i think i'm doing pretty good! that is all

What? No. The answer is NA Miata, not Versa. Try again.

Also, a Lease means you technically do not own the car.

yeah, I know...
it's just to make the teacher happy.
She actually knows what a Miata is. doubt I could say it was a "reasnoble, non biased, totally factual" purchase.
I would so go for a Miata, though...

Considering you can pick up a good NA for about as much as a used mattress and they are pretty reliable, it's not that bad of a purchase!

oh, I know they aren't, but look at it from a personal finance teacher's perspective. like I said, I would, but she wouldn't approve

Has she considered the cost of dropping a LS1 into a Versa? I'm guessing no. It will drop right into a Miata (with a easily available and affordable kit), but a Versa will require major (expensive) mods. Not to mention the lease terms probably prohibit engine swaps.

Seriously though, in the long term, buying a used Versa would have been cheaper than leasing a new one. Not only are you betting the car will depreciate more than Nissan thinks it will, you are paying for the depreciation + interest and in the end the car isn;t yours. You have mileage limits, use terms (probably prohibits track days, which I'm serious about) AND you're rolling in a bare ass naked base model entry level Nissan, a car with a 2 speaker sound system and roll down windows. It has a base 5 speed manual and no tachometer.

At least overexaggerate on repair costs and fuel costs. base off someone who would drive 30k miles a year
